Ethical Game-Viewing Etiquette for the Kruger National Park

With the privilege of enjoying a self-drive safari to the Kruger National Park comes a responsibility to view and interact with these creatures ethically and respectfully. Before we go into a list of some tips to make your trip more enjoyable, remember that the animals have the right of way and that all your fellow visitors are also there to appreciate the wildlife. Be patient and courteous towards each other.  Here’s your guide to ethical game-viewing etiquette in Kruger.

Adhere to Speed Limits:

The Kruger National Park has designated speed limits for a reason. Stick to these limits to prevent accidents involving wildlife crossing the road. We recommend driving much slower than the speed limit to increase your chances of seeing more wildlife.

Approach Slowly:

When approaching wildlife sightings, do so slowly and with caution.

Please switch off your Engine:

When you find yourself in the presence of wildlife, turn off your engine. This simple act allows you to hear the natural sounds of the bush and observe animals without the disturbance of a running motor.

Silence is Golden:

Maintain a hushed atmosphere within your vehicle. Avoid loud conversations, sudden noises, music, or excessive movement that could disturb the animals. Never make sounds to try and attract an animal’s attention. And please, no hooting!

Stay in Your Vehicle:

Never leave your vehicle except in designated spots such as rest camps and picnic sites. Do not hang out of your vehicle in an attempt to get a better view. This not only endangers you but also puts stress on the animals.

Share the Space and Sighting:

Leave the side of the road furthest from the sighting open for other vehicles to pass. Blocking the road or obstructing other visitors’ views is disrespectful and can lead to traffic jams. Don’t stay too long – once you have had the enjoyment of the sighting, move along to give other visitors the chance to experience the sighting. Let’s all share!

Respect Fellow Wildlife Enthusiasts:

Be patient and respectful of other visitors trying to enjoy the same sighting. Avoid aggressive driving or racing for the best position. Everyone is there for the same reason – to appreciate the beauty of nature.

Respect the Animal’s Right of Way:

Wildlife always has the right of way. Never block or obstruct their path. If an animal crosses the road, wait patiently until it moves on.

By adhering to these unwritten rules of ethical game-viewing etiquette, you ensure that your wildlife encounters are not only enjoyable for yourself but also safe and respectful to the animals and other visitors to the Kruger.
