What to pack for your Kruger National Park self-drive with Kitted Africa

Embarking on a self-drive camping adventure to the Kruger National Park is a wildlife enthusiast’s dream come true. With Kitted Africa, it promises to be an unforgettable safari experience. What should you pack for this adventure of a lifetime? Below is a list of some of the essentials to fully prepare yourself for the magic of Kruger.

  1. Clothing for All Seasons:

Summer seasons are warm and humid, so pack light, breathable clothing, sunglasses, a wide-brimmed hat, and your swimsuit to relax at the pool in certain camps. Winters are chilly in the evenings and mornings, so pack warm clothes. It is a good idea to pack layers so that you can shed a few as the winter days warm up.  If you plan on going on a guided night drive, the wind-chill factor adds to the cold, so pack accordingly. The Kruger’s average temperatures are:

Summer (December to February):

   – Average High Temperature: 30-35°C (86-95°F)

   – Average Low Temperature: 20-23°C (68-73°F)

Autumn (March to May):

   – Average High Temperature: 28-32°C (82-90°F)

   – Average Low Temperature: 17-20°C (63-68°F)

Winter (June to August):

   – Average High Temperature: 23-28°C (73-82°F)

   – Average Low Temperature: 7-12°C (45-54°F)

Spring (September to November):**

   – Average High Temperature: 30-35°C (86-95°F)

   – Average Low Temperature: 15-20°C (59-68°F)

  1. Neutral Colours:

Opt for neutral and earthy-toned clothing, such as khaki, olive, and brown.

  1. Comfortable Footwear:

Comfortable walking shoes are great for guided bush walks and for strolling around camp. It is also best to wear closed shoes at night for things such as scorpions. Sandals and flip-flops are great for relaxing around the campsite during the day.

Insect Repellent:

The Kruger is home to its fair share of the smaller critters, including mosquitoes. Bring a reliable insect repellent to ward off unwanted bites. The rest camp shops do sell insect repellent.

Sunscreen:

The African sun can be unforgiving. Apart from a hat, bring along a high-SPF sunscreen and lip balm.

  1. Binoculars and Cameras:

Binoculars are a must-have to get a better view of that camouflaged leopard or to scan the distant horizons for herds of elephants or plains game. If you are a birder, binoculars are a no-brainer. And don’t forget a good camera with a good zoom to capture those incredible wildlife moments.

  1. Reusable Water Bottle:

Stay hydrated in the African heat and stop unwanted plastic waste. A reusable water bottle is a practical choice. Our fully kitted rental cars are equipped with a fridge to keep your water and drinks cool.

  1. Travel Adapters and Chargers:

Don’t forget your travel adapters and chargers to stay powered up for capturing memories with your camera or phone. South Africa uses Type M electrical outlets.

  1. Maps and Guidebooks:

Although a GPS is handy, a physical map of Kruger National Park is essential to plan your game drive routes and determine distances. Good Kruger National Park maps can be bought at the rest camp shops. Should you wish to learn more about Kruger’s birds or mammals, don’t forget a guidebook or a South African birds or mammals app. This will enhance your experience and feed the brain.

  1. Patience and an Open Mind:

Last but certainly not least, bring a sense of wonder, patience, an eagerness to learn, and to embrace the unpredictability of the wild.
