Exploring the Kruger National Park: Southern, Central, and Northern Gems
The Kruger National Park is divided into three distinct regions – Southern, Central, and Northern Kruger – each section with its own unique appeal, diverse habitats, and natural wonders. Let Kitted Africa take you on a camping adventure through these beautiful parts of the park where the wildlife is abundant, and an unforgettable adventure awaits.

Southern Kruger: Where the Adventure Begins
The Southern Kruger is the park’s most popular region. It serves as the gateway for many visitors. Its accessibility from major cities like Johannesburg and Pretoria makes it an easy starting point. Here, you’ll discover an abundance of wildlife in diverse landscapes, from the savannahs north of Lower Sabie to scenic riverside drives along large rivers, lined with impressive shady trees. These rivers attract a variety of animals, especially elephants that love to take a splash in the river, and secretive leopards prowling among the dense vegetation. It is also easy to spot huge pods of hippos, crocodiles, and the iconic African Fish Eagle. The Southern region is popular for a reason – it is a hotspot of Big Five sightings and iconic rest camps like Skukuza that offer history, and creature comforts amidst the wilderness. The Southern section of the park also has the shortest distances between rest camps, gates, and picnic sites. Although it is the most popular section of the park, the vast network of roads makes it easy for the crowds to disperse. The Southern rest camps include Berg-en-Dal, Malelane Camp, Pretoriuskop, Crocodile Bridge, Lower Sabie, and Skukuza.

Central Kruger: Big Cat Country
The central section of Kruger is renowned as “big cat country”. It is not necessarily due to a larger concentration of big cats, but more because the central part of Kruger is an open savannah-like landscape, making it easier to spot and observe the secretive big cats. The landscape is vast and beautiful with a good network of dirt roads. There are two main tar roads; the one leading from the south, all the way to the north and travels through open plains where it is easy to see large herds of buffalo, zebra, and wildebeest The other main tar road connects the Western gate at Orpen to the main camp in this area, Satara. The dirt roads often follow dry river beds or they take you deeper into the savannah plains where you can experience the serene beauty of the African savannahs. The central Kruger rest camps include Satara, Orpen, Maroela, Olifants, Balule, and Letaba.

Northern Kruger: Serene and Unspoiled.
Venturing all the way north into Kruger, we enter a world of tranquility. This region is less crowded with fewer rest camps, offering a serene escape into the heart of Kruger’s fauna and flora. Pafuri, with its beautiful riverine forests and fever trees, is a birder’s paradise, while the vastness of Shingwedzi is ideal for classic game viewing and Punda Maria rest camp has that old-school Kruger charm. The sense of solitude and unspoiled beauty in the northern Kruger is unparalleled. The Northern Kruger, specifically areas such as Pafuri is well-known among the birding community. It offers a great variety of special birds only found in this part of the park, especially during the summer season when all the migrants have arrived. Northern Kruger is a birder’s paradise! The main northern rest camps include Punda Maria, Shingwedzi, Tsendze, and Mopani.
